Published by SINE Foundation, Einstein Center Digital Future, and Systemiq, summarizing a workshop held Jan 24, 2023 with PhD students/postdocs. Main authors: Aurel Stenzel (SINE) and Dominik Piétron (ECDF).

What it argues

Digital Product Passports (DPPs) are essential to sharing product-level sustainability data at scale, but the current landscape of 76+ competing EU DPP initiatives (plus others abroad) is fragmenting into non-interoperable data silos. The paper applies SINE’s own Data Commons framework — originally developed with Deutsche Bank, Systemiq and TLGG — to derive governing principles for DPPs, formulated as ~17 key questions any DPP ecosystem should be able to answer.

It closes with a call for EU-level harmonization (using market access as a regulatory lever, anchored in trade agreements for global reach) and a permanent institution/funding model rather than one-off projects.

Gap since closed

The original Data Commons whitepaper this paper builds on has since been ingested: Data Commons whitepaper (2022). The Data Commons page now covers its own foundational content (origin, three values, architecture choice), not just its application to DPPs.
