Cryptography researcher (zero-knowledge proofs, blockchain integration) at the Information Systems Engineering (ISE) group, TU Berlin, and lead author of Verifiable Carbon Accounting in Supply Chains (IEEE TSC, 2023). Personally connected to SINE through the CCTI programme — Martin Pompéry, 2026-08-17: “Er ist seitens SINE im CCTI Program Teil von SINE.”

Status ⟨2026-08-17⟩

Thin page. Everything below the SINE connection comes from the author biography of a single 2023 paper, and biographies age. There is no CV, no profile page, and no primary source on his current role, in sources/. His CCTI role — which work package, what he is contracted to deliver — is not documented in the CCTI proposal draft the wiki holds; he is not named in it. Treat his position inside CCTI as reported by Martin Pompéry and otherwise unverified.

Formal record ⟨as of the 2023 paper⟩

  • Dual MSc in computer science, TU Delft and TU Berlin, 2017.
  • PhD student and research associate, ISE group, TU Berlin — the chair held by Stefan Tai (Full Professor and Head of Chair since 2014; previously KIT 2007–2014 and IBM T.J. Watson 1999–2007), who is a co-author of the paper.
  • Research focus: “novel applications of zero-knowledge proofs and blockchains and their integration in real-world systems.”
  • TPC member, IEEE Blockchain Conference, since 2020. Award winner at the 2021 International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing.
  • At the time of writing, “leading a publicly-funded research project on ZKP- and Blockchain-based business solutions building upon ZoKrates.”

⟨Background: ZoKrates originates from the same TU Berlin chair — Eberhardt & Tai, 2018 — and Eberhardt’s 2021 doctoral thesis is on scalable privacy-preserving off-chain computations. Heiss’s work sits in a continuous local research line, not an adopted toolchain.⟩

Published line of work

From the paper’s own reference list, his prior work builds the substrate the carbon paper stands on:

  • From oracles to trustworthy data on-chaining systems (IEEE Blockchain, 2019) — with Eberhardt and Tai.
  • Trustworthy pre-processing of sensor data in data on-chaining workflows for blockchain-based IoT applications (ICSOC, 2021) — with Busse and Tai. This is the mechanism the carbon paper reuses for its attested sensor readings.
  • Verifiable Carbon Accounting in Supply Chains (IEEE TSC, 2023) — with Oegel and Shakeri (both SAP Innovation Center Network, Potsdam) and Tai.

Relevance to SINE

⟨Inference.⟩

  1. He is the author of the mechanism the wiki says ICC is missing. The confidentiality gap thesis holds that Criterion B is the one criterion requiring a cryptographic rather than a rulemaking answer, and that ICC proposes none. SINE has the author of one inside its own programme.
  2. He connects SINE’s two centres of gravity. The sustainability-data line (PACT, DPP, product carbon footprints) and the cryptographic line (CCTI, MPC, zkDB) meet in exactly one published artefact so far, and it is his.
  3. He is the bridge to the Cambridge work. Man & Kleppmann’s 2026 paper states its advance over his explicitly and thanks him for feedback on it — so the CCTI Co-PI and the SINE-side researcher are already in working contact on this problem. See Verifiable Carbon Accounting.
  4. The SAP co-authorship is an unexplored channel. Two of the four authors were at SAP’s Innovation Center Network, working on blockchain and supply-chain consistency — an enterprise route into the same problem that no wiki page currently accounts for.

Open questions

  • Which CCTI work package(s) is he on, and under what contract? Not in sources/proposals/2026-06-17-aria-ccti-proposal-draft-2.md.
  • Has he completed the PhD? Current title and institution as of 2026?
  • Is the ZoKrates-based publicly funded project still running, and is anything from it usable by SINE?
  • Are Oegel and Shakeri still at SAP, and is that relationship live?
