Hamburg-based foundation working as an implementer in the coffee sector — not a grant-maker and not a standards body. Self-description: it “focuses on enabling farmer families globally to independently achieve a superior livelihood”. Associated with the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, one of the largest green-coffee trading groups; the about page describes the founding family as “green coffee traders”.

Key figures

Legal formFoundation (Stiftung), Hamburg
Staff”more than 250 staff worldwide” (own about page) / 270 employees (German Wikipedia)
EndowmentContradictory: “approximately €150 million” (Daily Coffee News, 01.07.2026) vs. Stiftungskapital €30 million (German Wikipedia)
Reach386,000 smallholder families in 18 countries since 2001 (own about page)
Funders namedGIZ, USAID, Sida, IDB, Gates Foundation, Jacobs Foundation

⟨Note: the endowment contradiction is left standing. It does not affect eligibility (the thresholds are turnover and headcount, not capital), but it does affect any judgement of financial strength. The €150 million figure is journalistic, the €30 million figure encyclopaedic; neither is a primary foundation document.⟩

Countries

Per hrnstiftung.org/regions (retrieved 2026-08-14): Indonesia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala.

Against the nine countries admitted by Tender 10036847, that is one match — Uganda (Tanzania is admitted only for sugarcane). ⟨Inference: but the regions page is demonstrably incomplete as a measure of group-internal reach — see E.D.E. Consulting below and the consortium page. The 18-country list referenced on the about page is not published.⟩

An independent directory entry confirms an HRNS Africa office in Kampala, Uganda.

Programmes and digital products

  • International Coffee Partners (ICP) — “Like all ICP projects, the work of c&c is coordinated and implemented by Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung” (coffee-partners.org). Founding members include Tchibo, which is the link to Stefan Dierks.
  • coffee&climate (c&c) — ICP climate-resilience programme. Its toolbox app launched September 2024: interactive web app, free, multilingual, built by the agency Melting Experience (creative concept, UX, UI, development) with an offline mode for areas with limited connectivity and optimisation for “cheap and rugged smartphones”; Red Dot and iF Design Award 2025. ⟨Inference: the closest existing precedent to the tender’s WP2 offline-first data wallet, and therefore the strongest Key Expert 2 lead — the relationship already exists. Not evidenced on consent/identity architecture or data science.⟩
  • aCLIMAtar — online platform built with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, adapted from a cocoa platform by CIAT/Rikolto/World Cocoa Foundation; launched 30.06.2021 for Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua. ⟨Inference: the second Key Expert 2 track — covers data science and scientific reputation, the half Melting Experience does not.⟩

Leadership

Michael Opitz was Managing Director from 2005 and stepped down in July 2026 after 21 years; his profile now reads “Former Managing Director … July 2026 – Present”. Reported successors: Sorgenfrei and Hadem (Daily Coffee News, 01.07.2026).

Held open: his own page reads the same profile as transitional rather than completed — it carries “Managing Director 2005 – Present” and “Former Managing Director … July 2026 – Present” simultaneously, so “stepped down” above is the reported outcome, not a confirmed one. See Michael Opitz.

⟨Note: German Wikipedia still lists Sorgenfrei/Opitz as the management — that entry is stale as of July 2026.⟩

E.D.E. Consulting {#ede-consulting}

The consulting company in the same group. Opitz was its Managing Director 1992–2005 (13 years) before moving to the foundation — this is the one hard fact here, from his own LinkedIn profile.

Everything else on E.D.E. rests on search results and directory entries, not on primary company sources — the weakest source class in the tender cluster. ⟨Inference, flagged as such: E.D.E. operates a Hanoi office and has run long-term coffee projects in Vietnam, including work in Dak Lak / Cư M’gar; corroborated across a Devex organisation page, a VOV World report, a business-directory entry and the LinkedIn profile of a named regional representative (Dave D’Haeze). Four independent finds, no primary source.⟩

Why it matters for the bid, if it holds:

  • Vietnam becomes a group-internal second pilot country, next to Uganda.
  • A GmbH has a commercial register entry, which a foundation does not — removing the Handelsregisterauszug problem for at least one member.
  • A consultancy’s business model is bidding for donor money, which matters in a five-working-day window.
  • “Donor organizations” as a named client group sits closer to the required reference region “World” than country-specific programme projects do.

To verify with Opitz: is E.D.E. active in Vietnam today, and what is the company’s present legal relationship to HRNS? Also unchecked: whether E.D.E. meets the H10/H11 turnover and headcount thresholds on its own.

Position in the value chain ⟨Inference⟩

HRNS is a farmer-facing implementer funded and founded from the trading side of the coffee chain. For the tender that is simultaneously the reason the consortium can deliver and the reason an evaluator may ask whose interests a farmer-data governance model serves. See the conflict-of-interest section.
