Multi-stakeholder membership association for coffee-sector sustainability, 160+ members. Registered seat Rue Mina-Audemars 31, 1204 Geneva; operational Secretariat in Bonn (sources are inconsistent about which is the formal domicile; the statutes PDF could not be read). Established March 2016 by combining the 4C Association (author of the 4C Code of Conduct, 2006) with IDH’s Sustainable Coffee Program. The 4C verification scheme was subsequently separated out and is now operated independently by Coffee Assurance Services (CAS). Executive Director: Annette Pensel.

Why this page exists

Tell Münzing named GCP as an example of the institution type that “can provide the initial invitation” into a sector — the entry layer SINE does not control and cannot substitute. ⟨Tell Münzing, Slack 2026-08-18⟩ It is the convening anchor of the coffee Minimum Viable Context.

What it produces

  • Coffee Sustainability Reference Code — the sector baseline code.
  • Coffee Data Standard — 15 common farm-level sustainability indicators, developed 2017–2018 with COSA, Rainforest Alliance, WaterWatch and an expert committee (first draft Nov 2018). It underpins the multi-year Delta Project with the International Coffee Organization, Better Cotton and the International Cotton Advisory Committee, which aims at government endorsement and cross-commodity scaling.
  • Collective Reporting on Sustainable Coffee Purchases — since 2018. The 2024 edition: 11 reporting roasters and retailers; reported sustainable purchase volume up from 639,710 MT (2018) to 1,738,800 MT (2024). Reporting companies named: JDE Peet’s, Julius Meinl, Keurig Dr Pepper, Melitta, Nestlé, SUPRACAFÉ, Tesco, Westrock.
  • Country Platforms — ~10 stated. Named: Brazil, Honduras, Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, Vietnam, Ethiopia. The remaining three are unidentified.

Governance

Board of up to 16 seats, 13 elected for three-year terms: 4 producer, 2 trade, 4 industry, 3 civil society representatives, plus observer seats including the International Coffee Organization. Individual seat-holders were not retrieved. Voting thresholds and quorum rules sit in the statutes, which could not be parsed.

Money

Member fees across eight membership categories fund core functions. Named co-funders: IDH (partner since GCP’s creation; funds the Brazil, Honduras, Vietnam, Indonesia and Uganda platforms), BMZ via GIZ (funded the creation of the Kenya platform), Rainforest Alliance, and the ISEAL Innovation Fund. No monetary figures found.

Membership (named, verified)

Roasters and retailers: Nestlé, JDE Peet’s, Keurig Dr Pepper, illycaffè, Taylors of Harrogate, Mother Parkers, Farmer Brothers, Melitta, Julius Meinl, Tesco, Westrock, SUPRACAFÉ. Traders: ECOM Agroindustrial, Louis Dreyfus, Volcafe, Sucafina, Walter Matter. NGOs: Rainforest Alliance, Conservation International, Fair Trade USA, Enveritas. No government members identified.

Both Neumann Kaffee Gruppe and Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung are members — NKG rejoined in December 2022 after a lapse. No GCP board seat, founding role or joint country-platform project could be confirmed for either; membership alone is established.

The gap — and why it is the most consequential finding for SINE’s entry

No GCP position on the EUDR could be located. And beyond a generic governance page whose substance was not retrieved, no statement on data ownership or on the governance of the aggregated data under the Coffee Data Standard was found — nor any statement on farm-level geolocation collection.

⟨Inference: GCP is a convener that already holds a farm-level data standard with a credible route to government endorsement, and — as far as this research can see — no answer to who owns the data, who may see it, or how a claim under it is verified. That is precisely and only SINE’s layer. The strategic consequence: SINE does not need to build a coffee data standard, because one exists inside the institution that issues the invitation, missing exactly the governance and verification layer SINE builds. The counter-consequence, which should be stated plainly: GCP is also the actor best placed to build that layer itself, or to buy it from someone else. Verifying whether that governance page is empty or substantive is the highest-value single follow-up on the coffee map.⟩
